How is a steering wheel covered?
Upholstering a steering wheel with leather is a precision task that requires between 4 and 8 hours of labor, depending on the complexity:
- Template:We take precise measurements of your steering wheel—diameter, rim thickness, and spoke shape. For models we work on regularly (Alpine, Renault 5 Turbo, Peugeot 406 Coupé, Porsche…), the templates are already on file at the workshop.
- Cutting and preparation:The leather is cut into several pieces, each corresponding to a section of the steering wheel. The edges are thinned with a trimming knife to ensure a flush finish with no excess thickness.
- Upholstery:The leather pieces are glued and then hand-stitched to the rim, with precise tension applied to ensure a perfect fit. No slipcover: genuine upholstery that is glued and stitched in place.
- Finishing touches:polyester topstitching, adjusted seams at the temples, protective leather treatment.
Which steering wheels can be covered in leather?
All of them. From sedan steering wheels to classic car steering wheels, including sport steering wheels and models with airbags. We regularly work on:
- Alpine A110 and A310 — original Bakelite or foam steering wheels, often cracked
- Renault 5 Turbo and GT Turbo — three-spoke sport steering wheels
- Peugeot 406 Coupé— a highly sought-after model
- BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi — modern steering wheels with airbags
- Classic cars without power steering: 2CV, DS, Traction…
If your steering wheel isn't on this list, send us a photo: we've covered steering wheels for boats, go-karts, and even light aircraft.
Frequently Asked Questions About Leather Steering Wheel Upholstery Pricing
No. Our prices are based on the steering wheel being supplied disassembled. If you are unable to remove it yourself (particularly on vehicles equipped with airbags, where the process requires special precautions), we offer a removal and reinstallation service at a quoted price. You can also ship the steering wheel to us via a carrier.
Please allow 1 to 2 weeks from the time we receive the steering wheel until it is shipped back to you. The wrapping process itself takes half a day to a full day, but the time required for the adhesive to dry and the lead time for sourcing the specific leather may extend the timeline.
Yes. The airbag is located in the center hub, not in the rim. The leather covering on the rim does not affect the airbag’s operation in any way. However, removing the steering wheel from a vehicle equipped with an airbag must be done according to proper procedures (disconnecting the battery, waiting period)—which is why we offer a removal/reinstallation package.
A steering wheel cover is a pre-formed sleeve that slips over the rim. It makes the steering wheel bulkier, sometimes slips, and doesn’t hold up well over time. A custom-made cover involves gluing and sewing the leather directly onto the rim, without any extra bulk. The result is a factory-style steering wheel—only better, since you choose the leather, the grain, the color, and the stitching.
